Originally charged with third-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree disorderly conduct, Dr. Ted Jefferson entered an Alford plea Tuesday to an amended charge of harassment without physical contact. An Alford plea means a defendant is not pleading guilty to an alleged offense but is acknowledging the commonwealth has sufficient evidence to possibly procure a guilty verdict from a jury. Assistant County Attorney Jamie Mills filed a motion Friday to exclude that photo from Jefferson's trial, which is scheduled to start May 13 in McCracken District Court. On Tuesday, Jefferson's defense attorney, Bard Brian, characterized the motion as a "motion to protect Baptist Health," adding the commonwealth is only interested in "certain truths" in case against his client. According to a hospital memo sent Tuesday to Baptist Health faculty and staff, Dr. Ted Jefferson's surgical privileges have been revoked following a recommendation from the facility's Medical Executive Committee. "In the weeks that have passed since Dr. Jefferson threatened to bring an assault rifle into our hospital, he has attempted to divert attention away from what he did," the memo said. Admission of photo remains unsettled in Jefferson's case

Jefferson was charged Jan. 26 with terroristic threatening and disorderly conduct after he allegedly made gun-related comments in an operating room at Baptist Health Paducah. His trial is scheduled to begin May 13. The main issues Tuesday were a photograph that allegedly shows a contaminated surgical tray, a four-year-old slideshow produced by Baptist Health staff discussing issues in the sterilization department, and evidence of other quality control incidents that allegedly occurred at the hospital before and after Jefferson's episode. In court, Jefferson's attorney Bard Brian told District Judge Tony Kitchen he was still waiting to receive some evidence, including body camera footage recorded by Paducah police officers on Jan. 26, the day of the incident, and Jan. 27, when Jefferson was arrested. According to a Paducah police report, Dr. Ted Jefferson was performing surgery Tuesday evening when the hospital's chief nursing operator reported to administrators that Jefferson was having a "meltdown" and using profane language. The nurse also stated Jefferson remarked, "I guess administration will be happy if I come in here with an assault rifle," according to the report. Read More > |
