CEDAR RAPIDS — After nearly eight months of investigation, Cedar Rapids police have made an arrest in the November 2017 killing of Tarrence Newman.
Rayshaun Dion Friend, 29, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested Thursday morning on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and going armed with intent.
Police were called to a disturbance at 1506 D Ave. NE at 9:45 p.m. Nov. 12 when a caller reported “it sounded like something was breaking,” public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow told The Gazette.
When officers arrived, they found Newman, 40, dead on the home’s front porch.
An autopsy showed Newman had suffered “at least one gunshot wound,” police said.
Friend was booked into Linn County Jail on Thursday.
At the time of his death, Newman’s girlfriend, Stephanie Rinearson, told The Gazette that she and Newman had just learned the week before that she was pregnant.
“They took him away,” Rinearson said. “They took him away from my unborn baby. What am I supposed to tell my baby?”
Rinearson said she and Newman had been dating for nearly eight months when he was killed.
The two met in Cedar Rapids but learned they grew up in the same neighborhood in Chicago.
Newman had four children from a previous relationship who live with their mother.
Newman was a hard worker employed as a welder, Rinearson said.
