A Benton man accused of fatally shooting a man during an altercation at a Reidland storage unit pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning during an arraignment at the McCracken County Jail.

Jeffrey Conrad, 49, who works as a union carpenter, was arrested Tuesday night in Calvert City after a specially convened grand jury indicted him for murder earlier that day.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department, Conrad caught Garlon Cox, 30, and Brandon York, 36, both of Benton, stealing items from his storage unit Monday morning at AAA Mini-Storage on Eagles Nest Road.

Conrad, who was armed with a .45 caliber pistol, confronted the men, drew his pistol and told them not to move, officials said.

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said York took off running and Conrad fired the weapon, shooting Cox in the head. Cox was rushed to Lourdes hospital, where he died.

Cox was attempting to flee in a Ford Ranger pickup truck when Conrad fired his weapon, Hayden said.

York was apprehended approximately two hours later and arrested on burglary and drug charges. He was arraigned Tuesday and entered a plea of not guilty.

At his arraignment Wednesday morning, Conrad requested a public defender, and his bond was set at $500,000.

Conrad is scheduled to be arraigned again in circuit court at 8:30 a.m. on June 25.
