1 killed, 1 critically injured in Washington Boulevard crash

STAMFORD — A 19-year-old Stamford resident was killed, and another person was seriously injured, when a silver BMW crashed into a tree Wednesday afternoon on Washington Boulevard near Scalzi Park.

Stamford Police Sgt. Andrew Gallagher said the 19-year-old was a passenger in the vehicle when the crash occurred. The driver, a 20-year-old Stamford resident.

Both were taken to Stamford Hospital where the 19-year-old died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The 20-year-old, police said, remains in critical condition.

The identities of both parties are being withheld, Gallagher said, while officers investigate the crash and notify next of kin.

Police responded to the area about 12:30 p.m.

Gallagher said the 2006 BMW 525i was traveling north on Washington Boulevard near Second Street when it lost control and crashed into a tree. Both parties had to be extricated from the vehicle by Stamford Fire and Rescue using hydraulic tools.

The northbound side of Washington Boulevard was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash and the site was cleared.

The cause of the wreck is not yet known.
